MUSHROOMS OF THE FINGER LAKES REGION

  • ithaca, ny United States (map)
Mushroom Nature Walk (2).png

Join Olga Tzogas of Smugtown Mushrooms and mycologist Christian Schwarz for a guided mushroom hike in the wonderfully diverse Finger Lakes Region of New York! SKIP WORK + lets get awesome in the woods!

We’ll go for a relaxed hike, while practicing paying attention to the goings-on around us; perceiving the forest through the eyes of two mycologists with different perspectives on the biological actors on the stage we call the forest.

We will meet at 10 AM at a trailhead (the exact meeting location of our hike will be sent to registered participants, but will be within a half-hour drive of Ithaca, NY). Expect to spend around 4 hours in the woods.

Things to bring: Water, lunch, layered clothing (with an eye to the weather forecast), a camera if desired, a smartphone with the iNaturalist app installed, and a notebook if desired. Although foraging for edible mushrooms will not be our focus; collecting gear to keep other specimens in good shape for identification will come in handy. This icludes baskets, wax paper bags, tackleboxes.

We suggest a $25 suggested donation for the class but encourage a sliding scale of $10-40, please pay what you can afford and pay-it-forward, if you can so others can be supported who dont have the means to join us. thanks

Walk is open to registered participants only; registration will soon be available through Smugtown Mushrooms. If funds are limiting for you please get in touch directly: cfs period myko at gmaildot com. We accept donations via VenMo as well (@Christian-F-Schwarz), which allow us to offer lower-cost walks to other participants and are very much appreciated!

Me with Field of Muscaria NZ.jpg

Christian Schwarz is a naturalist based in California, the land of milk (caps) and honey (mushrooms). He teaches Natural History of Fungi at UC Santa Cruz, and co-authored "Mushrooms of the Redwood Coast”. He now spends his time photographing, teaching about, collecting, and researching macrofungi. Fungi satisfy his curiosity with their seemingly endless forms; from the grotesque to the bizarre to the sublime. Besides dabbling in mushroom taxonomy, he loves fish, plants, nudibranchs, moths, and dragonflies. He is passionate about community science, especially iNaturalist. He is a Research Associate at the Norris Center for Natural History at UCSC as well as the Santa Barbara Botanical Garden.
